Spelunking Scripture - August 2021
The Nurturing Faith Journal for September-October 2021 contains many interesting articles and Bible studies. Rev. Starlette Thomas, the former Associate Pastor at our former church, Village Baptist Church in Bowie, Maryland, writes “Who’s afraid of Critical Race Theory?” Rev. Alyssa Aldape, the former Associate Pastor at our current church, First Baptist Church of the City of Washington, D.C., writes “Mountaintop or midwife? Reimagining God’s Calling.” Another friend, Rev. Dr. Bruce Gourley, continues his series on “Religion and the American Presidents,” as well as another article, “What Kind of God?” Another friend, Rev. Dr. Bill Wilson, founding director of the Center for Healthy Churches, and the organizer for the annual CBF General Assembly golf outings, writes “Are we tourists, travelers or pilgrims?” Another friend, Rev. Dr. Brett Younger, who served as pastor of Broadway Baptist Church in Fort Worth, Texas (where my mother has been a member for over 85 years!) writes his “Lighter Side” column. So, the Journal is chockfull of articles by friends I have been blessed to know.
The Journal also contains my article, "Spelunking Scripture," which introduces the series of Bible study books that are being published by Nurturing Faith. The first two books in the series, Spelunking Scripture: The Letters of Paul and Spelunking Scripture: Christmas, have just been published and are available from the online bookstore at goodfaithmedia.org. In the article I seek to explain the rationale and the methodology for "Spelunking Scripture: Exploring Important Passages of the Bible."
The Nurturing Faith Journal not only contains many timely articles it also includes weekly Bible studies by Rev. Dr. Tony Cartledge, who writes from his experiences as pastor and professor at Campbell University. I subscribed to the Journal as a pastor, and my wife Linda subscribed to the Journal when she taught an adult Sunday school class at our former church. Since I retired from the pastorate, we have continued to subscribe to the Journal to enrich our continued Christian growth and understanding. I recommend it!
